I've probably lost track of the countless hours I spent waiting for others. They rarely arrive on time and dodge direct contact, such as a simple phone call. Instead, they send me text messages filled with unlikely excuses, though I never bothered to challenge them. The pattern of one-sided communication leaves their whereabouts and arrival times a mystery, casting me into a limbo saturated with uncertainty and anxiety. Has this passive acceptance of waiting become a normal feature of our modern existence?
Join me at wait 4 u, a screen-based installation examining the politics of waiting and the gap between expectation and reality through an awkward yet amusing experience. Set in a waiting room with multiple seats, the artwork presents a projection screen that continuously refreshes with AI-generated text messages containing absurd and humorous excuses for being late to the exhibition. The large language models, trained on massive amounts of internet data, can generate endless excuses. However, these meaningless explanations created by machines may obscure genuine human intentions and emotions. This collaborative experience invites spectators to reflect on how everyday communication is distributed and distorted within the physical-digital landscape and how time and space are perceived subjectively in our ecological and technological context.
